1) Ebbe Sand

Date of Birth: 19 July, 1972

Club: Schalke 04

Nationality: Denmark

Notes: Helped Brondby to three successive Danish league championships from 1996 to 1998. In 1997/98 he scored 28 goals in 33 games to earn himself a place in the Danish World Cup squad in 1998. In France he scored seconds after coming on as a substitute against Nigeria. He moved to Schalke a year later at the beginning of the 1999/00 season after recovery from testicle cancer. After a slow beginning he has been in good form, as the highest goalscorer and the best forward currently in the Bundesliga. He was also involved in Euro 2000.

 

2) Giovane Elber

Date of Birth: 23 July, 1972

Club: Bayern Munich

Nationality: Brazil

Notes: He has played for clubs such as AC Milan and Grasshopper in Switzerland before joining Stuttgart in 1994. He formed a 'magic triangle' with Balakov and Bobic. He did not enjoy much success with these stars leaving after winning the 1997 German Cup to join Bayern Munich. He scores and sets up many goals and has become a regular international for Brazil. He has won the German league in 1999 and 2000.

 

3) Michael Preetz

Date of Birth: 17 August, 1967

Club: Hertha Berlin

Nationality: Germany

Notes: Played previously for Duisburg and Wattenscheid 09 before joining Hertha Berlin in 1996. In 1998/99 he was league top scorer with 23 goals as he led Hertha Berlin into the European Champion's League. this led to him making his international debut at the age of 31. He fractured his arm in September 1999 which made him lose most of the1999/00 season but has returned stronger than ever in 2000/01.

 

4) Paul Agostino

Date of Birth: 9 June, 1975

Club: 1860 Munich

Nationality: Australia

Notes: Moved to Europe from Adelaide Sharks in Australia and had played for Swiss sides Yverdan and Young Boys and English side Bristol City before moving to 1860 Munich in 1997. Represented Australia at youth levels including at the Olympics in 1996 and made his full international debut also in 1996. Has recently become a regular goalscorer in Germany with reports even stating Milan were interested in a £10m bid. He has also started scoring regularly on the international scene.

 

5) Oliver Neuville

Date of Birth: 1 May, 1973

Club: Bayer Leverkusen

Nationality: Germany

Notes: Swiss born but qualifies for Germany through his grandparents. He played for Swiss clubs including Lucerne and Servette, winning the Swiss league with Servette in 1994, before joining Hansa Rostock. His performances for Hansa Rostock earned him a German national team call-up and he impressed in Euro 2000 qualifiers. He is a winger who has since moved to Bayer Leverkusen who provides for Kirsten and also scores goals.

 

6) Carsten Jancker

Date of Birth: 28 August, 1974

Club: Bayern Munich

Nationality: Germany

Notes: Played for Hansa Rostock and Koln in Germany before moving to Austria in 1995. In his one season with Rapid Vienna he matured and helped them progress to the European Cup Winners Cup final in 1996. He then moved back to Germany to Bayern Munich and has starred for them since. He scored eleven goals in the 1999/00 season as Bayern Munich won the title on the last day of the season ahead of Bayer Leverkusen. This earned him a place in the German squad for Euro 2000.

 

7) Ulf Kirsten

Date of Birth: 4 December, 1965

Club: Bayer Leverkusen

Nationality: Germany

Notes: Represented East Germany 49 times as well as almost as many for the unified Germany. Moved to Bayer Leverkusen from East German side Dynamo Dresden in 1990. He has been top goalscorer in the Bundesliga three times in 1993,1997 and 1998. He was also the second highest scorer in 1999 and 2000. Kirsten has been the best forward in the Bundesliga in the last decade.

 

8) Ioan Ganea

Date of Birth: 10 August, 1973

Club: Stuttgart

Nationality: Romania

Notes: Was top scorer in Romania in 1998/99 with 28 goals which propelled Rapid Bucharest to the league title. He had played for other clubs including Universitatea Craiova and FC Brasov previously. He moved to Stuttgart before 1999/00 to make up for the loss of Akpoborie and Bobic. He initially struggled but has recently started scoring regular goals. He was in Romania's Euro 2000 squad.

 

9) Ailton

Date of Birth: 19 July, 1973

Club: Werder Bremen

Nationality: Brazil

Notes: Was signed from Brazil and Guarani in 1998. Did not play well and looked to be an expensive mistake before Thomas Schaaf became the new manager and restored his confidence. He has formed a great partnership with Claudio Pizarro in attack and the record Werder signing at the time is finally living up to his initial price tag.

 

10) Emile Mpenza

Date of Birth: 4 July, 1978

Club: Schalke 04

Nationality: Belgium

Notes: Moved to Standard Liege from Mouscron and played well there. His parents were from Congo but he represents Belgium, having made his international debut at 19. He was involved in France 98. His elder brother Mbo also played at Standard Liege but they moved in different directions. Mbo moved to Sporting Lisbon and Emile, judged the more talented, moved to Germany. He chose Schalke 04 on the advice of Belgian captain Marc Wilmots. He has formed a good partnership with Ebbe Sand.
