Notes              : Another good Portuguese talent who is a skillful central midfielder who could be the next Paulo Sousa. He scored a goal in the semi-final win over Greece as he helped Portugal win the European U/16 Championship in 2000. Made his Portuguese full international debut in a friendly against Angola late in 2001. After thirty-two games for Sporting Lisbon, with one goal, in 2001/02 he played for the Portuguese U/21 team at the European U/21 Championships. Was then called up as a late replacement for the 2002 World Cup but did not play. Moved to Newcastle for £8.5m in the middle of 2002 from Sporting Lisbon. Played twenty-three matches with two goals for Newcastle in 2002/03.
