THE 2002 SEASON

After a comprehensive review of the overall business of the MLS it was decided in December 2001 that the South Florida market was not capable of supporting an MLS team. This led to the shut down of Miami Fusion. Even with low ticket prices, the attendance figures have not been high enough for either team even though Miami had a successful 2001 season. Tampa Bay Mutiny were also shut down as they could not find an owner. This left the MLS with only ten teams in 2002.
