Spain were unbeaten in their qualifying group an thrashed Norway 7-1 on aggregate in the play-offs but lost out to the Czech Republic the top spot in their group which would have got them to the final. Here is some information about their better players.:

 

Name : Miguel Angel Angulo

Position : Forward

Date of birth : 23/6/77

Team : Valencia (Spain)

Notes : Was at 1997 World Youth Cup and moved from Villareal to Valencia in 1998. Started as midfielder in 1999/00 season but was impressive up front as well, especially in the European Champion's League semi-final first leg against Barcelona where he scored 2 goals.

 

Name : Iker Casillas

Position : Goalkeeper

Date of birth : 20/5/81

Team : Real Madrid (Spain)

Notes : Has been in best form out of Real Madrid's goalkeepers in 1999/00 and has had a regular first team place. Was involved in 1999 World Youth Cup and helped Spain win the Meridian Cup in 1999. Helped Real Madrid to fourth place at the World Club Championship. Was part of Real Madrid European Champion's League winning side in 1999/00..

 

Name : Francisco Farinos

Position : Midfielder

Date of birth : 29/3/78

Team : Internazionale (Italy)

Notes : Was at 1997 World Youth Cup. Product of Valencia's youth system and is a hard working central midfielder. Was a regular in Valencia's team for a number of years and was part of the team that reached the European Champion's League final. Moved to Inter after paying his buy-out clause.

 

Name : Gabri

Position : Midfielder

Date of birth : 10/2/79

Team : Barcelona (Spain)

Notes : Second Spanish player since Xavi to recently break into first team. 1999 World Youth Cup winner in Nigeria. Rose from being a substitute in Barcelona B to the first team in a year making his debut at the start of 1999. Scored four goals in the Champion's League after being introduced into the starting line-up for the second group stage.

 

Name : Gerard Lopez

Position : Midfielder

Date of birth : 12/3/77

Team : Valencia (Spain)

Notes : Was at both 1997 and 1999 World Youth Cup. Started at Barcelona, but went on loan to Alaves and then joined Valencia. His hat-trick against Lazio in a 5-2 victory in the first leg of the European Champion's League quarter-finals brought him to international attention. Was part of Spain's Euro 2000 squad.

 

Name : Jose Mari

Position : Forward

Date of birth : 10/12/78

Team : AC Milan (Italy)

Notes : Moved from Sevilla to Atletico Madrid in 1997 for 700,000. Soon became a star there, helping his club play well, and being a part of the Spanish U/21 and full international teams. Moved in mid 1999/00 season where Atletico Madrid were struggling, and eventually relegated after he left, and joined AC Milan for 13.5 million.

 

Name : Xavi

Position : Midfielder

Date of birth : 25/1/80

Team : Barcelona (Spain)

Notes : Joined Barcelona in 1989 when only 11. Made debut for senior side in 1998 in the Spanish Super Cup against Mallorca. Helped Barcelona win league in 1998/99. Best player in the Spanish team which won the 1999 World Youth Cup in Nigeria. Best young Spanish player. Competed in 2000 European U/21 Championships.
