AUSTRALIA

Australia are the hosts for the Sydney 2000 Olympics and qualify automatically. As I am Australian I actually know a reasonable amount about the players in the Olyroos as they are known over here. This is some of the information about their better players:

Name : Simon Colosimo

Position : Defender

Date of birth : 8/1/79

Team : Carlton SC (Australia)

Notes : He was the captain for the Under-20 team for the World Youth Cup in

Nigeria in 1999. Looked to be heading overseas before a clumsy tackle by

Andy Cole in a Man Utd Vs Australia game injured him badly

Name : Jason Culina

Position : Midfielder

Date of birth : 5/8/80

Team : Ajax (Holland)

Notes : His move overseas to Brondby collapsed when he could not attend a

medical because of his involvement in the World Youth Cup in Nigeria.

Won an alternative move to Ajax instead.

Name : Brett Emerton

Position : Midfielder

Date of birth : 22/2/79

Team : Sydney Olympic (Australia)

Notes : Current captain of the Olyroos. Went to 1997 and 1999 World Youth

Cup.

Name : Hayden Foxe

Position : Defender

Date of birth : 23/6/77

Team : Sanfrecce Hiroshima (Japan)

Notes : Went to the Ajax academy but was seriously injured. Moved to Arminia

Bielefeld in Germany but re-injured himself. Lastly moved to Sanfrecce

Hiroshima where he has finally remained healthy and is reaching his

potential. Has prior Olympic experience having gone to Atlanta in 1996.

Name : Vince Grella

Position : Midfielder

Date of birth : 5/10/79

Team : Empoli (Italy)

Notes : Currently playing in Serie B. Made his debut against Juventus when

Empoli was in Serie A. Played in 1997 and 1999 World Youth Cup.

Name : Harry Kewell

Position : Midfielder

Date of birth : 22/9/78

Team : Leeds United (England)

Notes : The star of the Australian team. Scored two goals in the two-leg World

Cup play-off Australia lost to Iran. One of the best young players in the

world if he actually turns up to play in the Olympics which is doubtful

given his recent attendance rate for Australia.

Name : Kasey Wehrmann

Position : Midfielder

Date of birth : 16/8/77

Team : Perth Glory (Australia)

Notes : Won a player of year award for 98/99 season in Australia given out by a

local soccer magazine.
