Notes: Hamann clinched a place in the German national side in the build-up to France 98 and continues to command a regular place in the squad today having also featured at Euro 2000. Dietmar Hamann signed for Newcastle for £4.5m in July 1998 from Bayern Munich, where he won the UEFA Cup in 1996 and the Bundesliga in 1997, and has since established himself as one of the finest midfielders in the Premier League. After his first season in England, where he helped Newcastle to the FA Cup final, he moved to Liverpool for £8m and has continued to impress.
