QUARTER-FINALS

1ST LEG

Bayern Munich had an important away win over Manchester United, Galatasaray came back from two goals down to beat Real Madrid, Leeds effectively won the tie at home and Arsenal beat Valencia but it is all still to play for in the second leg.

2ND LEG

Both of last years finalists, Real Madrid and Valencia qualified for the semi-finals. Surprise team Leeds United also qualified after knocking out the Spanish champions Deportivo. Bayern Munich knocked out Manchester United who were knocked out at the quarter-final stage for the second successive season.

SEMI-FINALS

1ST LEG

Bayern Munich again won away to improve their chances of knocking out the reigning champions. Leeds and Valencia played out a goalless draw.

May 1: Real Madrid 0 Bayern Munich 1

May 2: Leeds United 0 Valencia 0

 

2ND LEG

Bayern Munich and Valencia secured their places in the European Champion's League final to be played in Milan.

May 8: Valencia 3 Leeds United 0

May 9: Bayern Munich 2 Real Madrid 1

 

FINAL

Bayern Munich and Valencia were the previous two losing finalists and fought in a tight match with few chances. Both goals came from penalties and eventually after extra time the match was decided in a penalty shoot-out with Bayern goalkeeper Oliver Kahn, the hero.
